Description
A stunning piece of history. This is a 14ct yellow gold ring, holding a central rose cut diamond and a halo of seed pearls.
The ring is very special and it likely dates to before 1850.
Early gemstone rings typically had a closed-back setting. This is because lapidary and diamond cutting techniques were not so refined, and the stones needed enhancements. Metal foil was added in order to enhance colour and sparkle. As lapidary technology advanced, foil enhancement was no longer needed, and rings were left open at the back to allow in more light. Foiling gemstones dates back thousands of years!
This type of ring needs extra special care. Never clean with water or any liquid. Take care if wearing in the rain, and of course do not wear when swimming or in the shower. To clean, use only jewellery cloths if needed, or a soft, dry toothbrush.
The foil of antique rings can get damaged or oxidise over time. This can give stones a slightly dark appearance, especially with foiled diamonds.
When viewed from an angle, the diamond is clear and bright, but unfortunately the darker foil underneath cannot be cleaned or removed. Do not let this deter you, but let it serve as a reminder of this ring’s fantastic age and history!
Some of the pearls are later replacements, but all are in very good antique condition. Due to the setting of the diamond, it is hard to estimate a carat weight.
There is great finger coverage with this ring, it is a statement piece! I recommend careful and delicate wear of this ring to ensure it lasts another lifetime.
There are no stamps but metal purity has been tested with an XRF machine. Provenance is likely Belgium.
Size M/6.5 and not suitable for resizing.
