Description
Here we have an absolutely stunning 5 stone, 18ct antique turquoise ring. Dating to 1900, if not earlier, it is a late Victorian piece!
In Victorian times, pearl and/or turquoise half hoop rings such as this were very popular choices for engagements. Turquoise symbolised true love during this time, and a 5 stone ring could be symbolic of 5 years of marriage. The Victorians were very sentimental and romantic, so no doubt there was lots of love and thought put into this ring.
There is a faded hallmark and the date letter is illegible. However, there is a sweet and sentimental inscription inside the band – on one side “Haddie” (plus another rubbed letter) and on the other “Dec. 1900”.
There is also another date showing beside the above, which seems to be “21 7 13” for 27th July 1913 or, 2/7/3 (1903). Who knows what story lies behind these dates…
The ring is a nice heavy weight, at 4.39g. It’s a strong and substantial piece. In excellent condition for its age – just surface scratches as expected with (loving) wear. Each turquoise cabochon sets securely set into the claws, which are themselves beautiful and decorative.
It is a size M 1/2 which suggests it may have been previously resized. I would advise against having this ring resized due to its age and also because of the wonderful engravings which may be lost in the process.
A truly beautiful Antique Turquoise Ring.
