Description
We have here a really quite breathtaking aquamarine ring! Crafted in antique platinum, this ring is the absolute epitome of vintage elegance. The centre stone is of a beautiful baby blue, very uniform in colour. There are clear needle-like inclusions typical of aquamarine. The side stones are of a slightly deeper blue colour. It sits low on the finger, offering great coverage. The central aqua is a soft, octagonal shape with curious proportions that suggest it may have been cut directly at or near the mine it came from.
It may have started life as a brooch or pin of some kind, featuring just the centre stone.
The back of the centre stone setting is very flat, and the bottom of the stone protrudes slightly, making light contact with the finger when worn. Typically, a setting for a stone of this depth would extend well below it, to keep it off the skin. This makes me think that whoever converted this piece, left the centre stone in its original setting and built around it, rather than unsetting it and starting from scratch. This is my theory, but one can never be sure.
I have been assured by several jewellers that this will not affect the ring’s structural integrity, nor will it put excess pressure on the stone or setting. As with all vintage rings, it should be worn with gentle care, and the setting should be checked by a jeweller on a yearly basis!
This ring certainly has its quirks but I believe it only adds to its charm. It likely had a lot of sentimental value. Being a hand made piece, the side stone settings are not totally level/symmetrical and the base of their settings protrudes a bit from the width of the shank. Though this is not necessarily a ‘flaw’, I have reflected all these details in the price, which I believe is competitive.
A size L and I would only recommend it be sized one size up or down.
In very good vintage condition. Likely dating to the art deco period 1920-1935 approx.
